THE ATHABASCA SAND DUNES
I heard about these dunes a long time ago. Never did I think I would actually be able to witness them with my own eyes. Protected by their remote nature, not many people get to experience them.
My father and I spent a month living off the land and off the grid as we traveled over 500 km by boat to see this mutation of nature. When I first let my bare feet touch the soft sand all I could think was "I cant believe this is in Saskatchewan."
This trip had its conflicts though. We had 5 flat tires driving to Stony Rapids, where we launched our boat. We were constantly surrounded by hundreds of mosquitoes and were stuck in our tent for multiple days at a time due to powerful storms. A sand-storm blew fine grains of sand into my $3,400 camera deeming it unusable by the end of the trip, and I lost 20lb over the course of 3 weeks.
Some would say my father and I were crazy for attempting this trip. For me, going on expeditions like this, gives me a purposeful life, and allows me to show you how beautiful the world is, through my eyes.
